This site is intended to gather the best evidence available about complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) for sufferers and professionals, to update it as more or better evidence becomes available, and to have it accessible over Internet. The principal mechanism will be by searching for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of complementary and alternative therapies, and providing abstracts of them. It contains stories from Bandolier, plus abstracts of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or other studies about CAT.

The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) is a programme within Learning & Development at the Public Health Resource Unit. Since 1993 the programme has helped to develop an evidence-based approach in health and social care, working with local, national and international groups. CASP aims to enable individuals to develop the skills to find and make sense of research evidence, helping them to put knowledge into practice.

The ever-increasing volume and diversity of information makes it difficult for clinicians and others to keep up-to-date with the latest developments. A major challenge of the National Health Service is to ensure that clinical and other decisions relevant to the care of sick children and the prevention of illness and disability are based on the best available evidence. The Centre for Evidence-Based Child Health was set up to address this challenge through an education and research programme designed to help health practitioners acquire the necessary skills to integrate the critical analysis of evidence underpinning their day to day decisions into their practice.

Centre for Evidence Based Medicine

Provides a wide range of resources, including the EBM toolbox which assists the user in asking focused clinical questions and filtering and critically appraising information.

Centre for Evidence Based Mental Health

Centre promotes and supports evidence based mental healthcare. Site provides access to Cochrane reviews and DH reviews, as well as clinical trials.

Centre for Evidence Based Nursing & Midwifery

Thames Valley University's Centre for Evidence-Based Nursing and Midwifery links with healthcare providers across London and the Thames Valley, which comprise some of the most diverse social and economic populations in England. The Centre has well-established links with local NHS Trusts, and works with nurses and midwives from the acute and primary healthcare sectors to develop, implement and evaluate evidence to promote, support and sustain best practice.

Directory which is updated monthly, published by BMJ. Differentiates itself from other research reviews in that it “begins with the questions, then looks for the evidence addressing those questions”.

Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field Registry

The CM field has put a great deal of effort into laying the groundwork for conducting systematic reviews by constructing a database of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) on CAM topics. To date, over 6500 trials have been identified through regular high yield search strategies.This link provides instructions on how to search the registry.

Cochrane Library database

A regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Data from numerous small studies are often combined statistically (with meta-analysis). The website provides free access to the abstracts and full text is available through the NELH (see link below).

The Health Evidence Bulletins - Wales act as “signposts to the best evidence across a broad range of evidence types and subject areas. Where information from randomised controlled trials is available it is included”. The site contains a search engine for keyword searching.

Knowledgeshare - NHS information support for Evidence Based Practice
